Nathan Freke

Nathan Freke (b. Hillingdon 8 September 1983), who currently lives in Kidderminster , was the 2006 British Formula Ford Champion, having won 10 races, 17 podiums, 18 front row starts, 13 poles and 6 lap records. He was one of the 2006 McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Finalists in his first full year of car racing. Nathan has held 4 British Kart Racing Championship Titles and in 2005 became the only driver ever to win an FIA/CIK Superkart Race in a Division 2 Kart against Division 1 Karts, (50% power differential).

Early Life

Nathan was born in Hillingdon Hospital and spent his early years living on RAF bases in London and Huntingdon, prior to moving to Kidderminster in 1987. Nathan attended Foley Park, St John's Middle, and Bewdley High schools before leaving full time education in 2000. From the time he could talk Nathan's sole aim in life was to become a racing driver and at the age of 9 he found a way to pursue his aim - racing a 60cc Cadet Kart at local circuits.

Driving Career

Over the next 12 years Nathan went on to become one of the best Kart Racers the UK has ever produced amassing 6 Nationally recognised titles, numerous club championships, and over 400 trophies including a European Championship race win. In 2005 Nathan was awarded the title of Kart Racer of the Year by the Karting Yearbook. Nathan is a Director of the Association of Racing Kart Schools who train and test potential Kart drivers for their racing licenses, he is the Principal and Head Examiner at the Grand Prix ARKS School in Birmingham.

During 2003 and 2004 Nathan attempted to enter the car racing arena with an abortive attempt at the TVR Tuscan Challenge, he also campaigned his own eldery Formula Ford 1600 car.


His limited success in the FF1600 led to an approach by a sponsor, Newnet PLC, who would fund a full season in FF1600 at Castle Combe Circuit and the end of season trophy meetings. To be competetive in these events would mean acquiring another car and the last ever FF1600 built by Kent based constructor Jamun Racing was purchased. Nathan had a collection of varied results at Castle Combe during the season until the Carnival meeting where he confounded the pundits by finishing 2nd in wet conditions. He went on to confound them further in the first heat of the Formula Ford Festival by putting the car on pole for that race, unfortunately an engine failure wrecked any chance of winning. However at the last big trophy meeting of the year with over 150 entrants he went on after problems in the early races to finish 3rd overall and fastest lap. These results impressed Newnet so much that they agreed to part fund a campaign in the re vamped 2006 British Formula Ford Championship, also impressed were Jamun Racing who offered Nathan a works drive in their championship winning Mygale cars for the 2006 season. This together with the Newnet funding gave Nathan a real chance of stepping on the ladder to becomming a professional motor racer.


Nathan commences testing for the season and is imediately among the quickest of the drivers but is dismissed by the motorsport press in favour of Irishman Peter Dempsey who is by far the most experienced driver in the field with more than double the number of race wins than Nathan had actual races. The first 4 races of the season go well but not well enough with Dempsy winning all 4 and Nathan claiming 3 seconds and a third. However the season changes at Snetterton when Nathan acheives his first ever car race win and the lead in the championship - a position he never relinquishes winning the Championship by 165 points and the results shown at the top of this page. These results once again astound the press who now see Nathan as a future star, confirmed by his nomination for the Young Driver of the Year award the most prestigeous prize in British Motorsport.

Formula Ford is one of the world's leading entry-level championships in Formula racing. In 2007 the series is a worldwide event.


Nathan tested in a number of different formula cars, Champcar Atlantic, F3, and FBMW, but funding restricted his activities to chassis development for Van Dieman International and Marangoni Tyres as his management tried to place him in a top series seat.

July 2007 Nathan was invited to participate in the Redline Ten of the Best road car competition at Elvington, North Yorkshire as part of the MR2 Team. Nathan had a self prepared road MR2 and in competition on the 1/4 mile drag strip sets the fastest time ever recorded in Europe by a road legal MR2 at 10.4 seconds the 4th fastest recorded in the world by a car of this type. He won the 'Ten of the Best' RWD 1/4 mile trophy at his first attempt.


Nathan signed a contract to race in the USA in the IndyCar feeder series, Indy Lights. The contract was with Michael Crawford Motorsport a young ambitious team. The 2008 Indy Lights Series is contested over 16 races 8 Ovals and 8 Road Courses, and the cars average nearly 190 mph on the Indianapolis oval at the world famous Indy 500 meeting. The Indy Lights series provides a proving ground for drivers to progress to Indy Car in the same way that GP2 is the stepping stone to F1. Nathan will commute back and forth in 2008 whilst continuing to run his own motorsport team in Kidderminster. Unfortunately Nathan parted company with the team after 3 races because of their inability to provide a competetive car. Nathan continues to seek the seat which will take him to the highest level.

Nathan drove in the 2008 Nürburgring 24 hour race held at the 14 mile Nordschleife circuit. It was his first time driving for more than 40 minutes in any race. Nathan and the Marangoni Tyres backed Fiat 500 R finish the 24 hour Nurburgring race in 148th position after starting 220th.

Nathan successfully defended his 1/4 mile RWD title in the 2008 Ten of the Best event at Elvington Airfield, and in addition won the 1/4 mile RWD shootout which he missed out on in 2007 because of engine failure. His self prepared MR2 placed 12th in the overall standings for the 1/4 mile, the only RWD car in the top 20 filled with 4WD cars in the other 19 places. New for 2008 was a standing 1 kilometer top speed trial and Nathan finished a creditable 7th with a top speed of 169.9 mph in 20.36 seconds, by far the lowest powered car in the top 20.


Nathan is the 2009 Ginetta G50 Cup Champion after winning over half the races in the series which supports the British Touring Car Championship. With live television coverage the TOCA package is the best attended 4 wheel motorsports series in the UK. Nathan campaigned a brand new G50 run by his own Century Motorsport team, with the support of EOS Productions Ltd, and Hows My Driving a road safety organisation. Nathan is now seeking a drive in 2010 in British Touring Cars, or possibly Sports Endurance racing, but funding will be critical to this. Nathan is now the most successful National / International British racing driver with a win ratio of over 42% and is the 6th most successful 2009 racing driver worldwide in national series in terms of race wins. In 2009 Nathan finally achieved his aim with his Toyota MR2, setting a new World best time on the 1/4 mile drag strip of 9.772 seconds, sadly before he was able to lower the record further the car was written off in a motorway accident.


Nathan started the year with a win - in the Wyre Forest Sports Personality of the Year, a competition run by the Kidderminster Shuttle and Times with internet voting.

Nathan raced in the British GT series in the G4 class with Danish lady driver Vibe Smed. Despite missing one round and suffering numerous mechanical failures, the pair finished 3rd in the series in the Century Motorsport Ginetta G50.


Nathan had a last minute deal placed in front of him to race in the new updated Ginetta Championship re named the GT SuperCup. This series carries a prize of a fully funded British Touring Car drive for 2012. The deal was struck with exclusive Gentlemans Bookazine The Player International, who have provided the car, entry fee, and spares package. So late was the deal that the new car was only delivered on the day before the first round and winning the series would be a real challenge.

In addition Nathan continues to expand his Century Motorsport team running a developmental Ginetta G55 GT3 car in the British GT series as well as a G50 in the GT4 class. He is also in negotiations to commence running sports prototypes for British manufacturer Juno Cars in Europe and the UK.
